Road Rants - Single Track Roads

Told you I could do a series of these... I now live in quite a rural area and we have a lot of roads that seem mildly unusual to some, and seem to strike the fear of god in others! Whilst they seem to have disappeared from most of the UK, there are still over 2,500 miles of them up here! Single Track Roads (with passing places) As the name suggests these are roads with one lane; not one lane in each direction - just one single lane, with the occasional passing place where the road is wide enough to allow to vehicles to pass. Driving these roads requires more concentration and awareness of wh…

Road Rants - Overtaking

I could probably put together an entire 'Road Rants' series, but this one is inspired by some comments I saw today on a facebook post about overtaking "Why should we have to brake in our cars with our children to let them in" Firstly, pet hate, people like to invoke the whole "think of the children" mentality, as if because your car has children in it someone is less likely to want to crash into it. I don't care whether the occupant is 7 or 70, I don't want to hit another vehicle with a person in it (or, for that matter, a pet... which I'd probably get along with more than the person) Second…

How not to do APIs

The company involved here will remain anonymous, as they offer a good (and relatively unique) service and I don't want to damage any relationship with them, nor discourage others from using them just for this reason! Additionally, their support has been excellent. I hope others find this though, and take it into account when considering their own API design and strategy decisions. As you may know I have some experience developing complex APIs for large service providers. The approach to this has changed over the years, but some of the basic principles remain the same. The Company The company…

Nominet DRS

I recently had a case decided by Nominet DRS (thankfully in my favour, but that wasn't unexpected). Now that's finally over I can publish this ;) ... complete with my own inimitable, occasionally sarcastic, insightful(!) comments ;) The case was against the owner of the domain stagelampsuk.co.uk, where my company name was StageLamps Limited and trading with the domain stagelamps.co.uk. This is the response (in full) that we got from the owner of stagelampsuk.co.uk with respect to an accusation of passing off as us and the ensuing Nominet Dispute Resolution process, my own comments are inters…

Jet 2, a rant...

This was originally posted on Facebook, and sent to Jet2, who did respond with a generic "Sorry, we look forward to welcoming you on board again" type message. I had tried to be mildly humourous too :( EDI to OLB... via LBA Firstly the operator billed the service as a direct flight from Edinburgh Turnhouse to Olbia so I was somewhat surprised to discover the stop in Leeds when checking the flight information before departing to the airport, this is the fault of the tour operator though as it's clear on Jet2.com that the flight is via Leeds. I've been on flights which have stopped en-route to…
