Road Rants - Single Track Roads

Told you I could do a series of these... I now live in quite a rural area and we have a lot of roads that seem mildly unusual to some, and seem to strike the fear of god in others! Whilst they seem to have disappeared from most of the UK, there are still over 2,500 miles of them up here! Single Track Roads (with passing places) As the name suggests these are roads with one lane; not one lane in each direction - just one single lane, with the occasional passing place where the road is wide enough to allow to vehicles to pass. Driving these roads requires more concentration and awareness of wh…

Road Rants - Overtaking

I could probably put together an entire 'Road Rants' series, but this one is inspired by some comments I saw today on a facebook post about overtaking "Why should we have to brake in our cars with our children to let them in" Firstly, pet hate, people like to invoke the whole "think of the children" mentality, as if because your car has children in it someone is less likely to want to crash into it. I don't care whether the occupant is 7 or 70, I don't want to hit another vehicle with a person in it (or, for that matter, a pet... which I'd probably get along with more than the person) Second…

First Solo

Firstly, I hate selfies... and photos of me in general, but this is a moment I don't want to forget... Sitting on the taxiway for the first time, in a plane by myself this whole "being a pilot" things suddenly feels quite real, particularly since I'm lined up behind BA's dove. The day started off as any other lesson in the circuit, just a few normal touch and go's and we taxied back to the apron when my instructor hops out, engine still running, and suggests I do and do it again by myself. Procedurally, it's exactly what I've just been doing, the only difference is my first radio call is pref…

Husqvarna Automower Challenge - 1 week on

For a bit of background on this see my first post on this. But, in summary, I am a participant in the automower challenge. A week away I've been away for the last week, with Little Shop of Horrors and Audrey II (who the Automower would be no match for I'm sure ;)) Rather unusually for the North of Scotland we've had some really good weather lately (the high today was 26ºC) and a little rainfall earlier in the week - so the grass has grown well. Automower Connect Or, keeping in touch with my lawnmower (there's a sentence I never thought I'd type!) Because the Automower is new, and I was concern…

Estate Agents...

Probably second only to used car salesmen in the list of professions I can't really abide dealing with on a regular basis. I've never reviewed an Estate Agent, nor really had the need to compare them, so I present my own experiences below in the hope that it helps others. I eventually settled on Rettie in Newton Mearns – see how we got on here Selling Houses Having recently relocated far north to the Scottish Highlands we're left with that daunting challenge ... selling the house in Glasgow. In my area there are a few agents that pop up more than others; Nicol Estate Agents, Rettie and Co, an…
